Department Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU is home to over 150 faculty, adjunct faculty, and clinical associates under the direction of Mary Tanski, M.D., M.B.A., associate professor and Department Chair. Our providers staff OHSU s Level 1 Trauma Center and Doernbecher Pediatric ED as well as three community Emergency Departments (Hillsboro Medical Center, Adventist Health Portland, and Columbia Memorial Hospital), three ED Observation Units, the Immediate Care Virtual Visits Program, and the Oregon Poison Center.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU has always been highly ranked in NIH Funded Research and is home to the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine (CPR-EM). Our residency program currently trains 33 residents and offers a diverse training environment through partnerships at several area hospitals. OHSU offers EM specialty training in the form of select fellowships in:
Research, Education, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Administration, EMS, Toxicology, and Ultrasound. We are proud to serve OHSU s mission of Healing, Teaching, and Discovery.

This position is for a physician-scientist in emergency medicine who has the training, skills, and track record to successfully obtain federal R-level grants, mentor early-stage investigators, and further expand the scientific impact of the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine. Candidates for this position will be expected to have advanced clinical research training (e.g., research fellowship), an advanced research degree (e.g., MS, MPH, MCR), demonstrated success in obtaining federal research funding (e.g., K08, K23, R-level grants), and ability to begin writing federal R-level grant applications.

Competitive applicants will likely be at the Associate Professor level or higher (or eligible to advance from the Assistant Professor rank), including a requisite body of scholarly work.

Function / Duties of Position
  • Work as clinical faculty in the emergency department (including EDs at OHSU, Hillsboro Medical Center, and Adventist Health), including supervision of trainees. Position includes 50% protected time for research.
  • Grant writing, with focus on federal (NIH, AHRQ, DoD, CDC, HRSA) R-level research awards
  • Function as core physician-scientist faculty in the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine (CPREM), including monthly meetings, monthly seminars, and shared administrative responsibilities for CPREM
  • Mentorship for early-stage investigators (residents, fellows, faculty)
Required Qualifications

Education: MD or equivalent;
Emergency Medicine Residency Certificate

Experience: Knowledge, training and experience in clinical and academic Emergency Medicine

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required; ABEM or ABOEM Board certified or board eligible
