Overview
Transmission Engineer - Overhead Transmission (Boston, Wallingford, Portland) at Burns & McDonnell. The Staff Transmission Engineer will work on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on overhead high voltage transmission line projects. The role involves collaborating with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.
Responsibilities- Perform and lead transmission design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion, including PLS-CADD modeling, line routing, structure analysis to develop load trees, design criteria, sag-tension calculations, wire blowout, swing angle, damper recommendations, structure spotting, clearance reports, wire selection, etc.
- Prepare specifications for construction, hardware, and material for high voltage overhead transmission lines; structure design and development; hardware design and selection; and field installation supervision.
- Prepare construction drawings and cost estimates for high and extra high voltage overhead transmission lines.
- Compile calculations for required electrical clearances based on NESC, GO 95 or other applicable codes and resources.
- Communicate interpretation and application of necessary NERC, FERC and regional requirements and standards.
- Possess strong knowledge of commonly used transmission engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the transmission engineering services industry.
- Provide instruction and guidance to less experienced staff; may develop into a leadership role, leading teams of engineers and serving as a primary interface between Burns & McDonnell Engineers and clients.
- Experience as the technical lead on projects and performing quality reviews is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program with 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred) or
- Bachelor's degree in civil or related Engineering Technology from ABET-accredited program with FE exam passed and 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred) or
- Master's degree in civil engineering with 2 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred).
- Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
- Proficient knowledge of design software and tools including Bentley Power Line systems (PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE, PLS-LITE), SAG 10, L-PILE, AUTO CAD.
- Knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NESC, GO95, ASCE 74, ASCE 48-11, or ASCE 10-97.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work methodically and analytically; strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, and problem solving.
- Experience or ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications is a plus.
$- Yearly. The compensation range complies with local/state regulations and is based on factors including education, experience, and location. The total package may include a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus.
