Job Description

The Preschool Teacher is responsible for assisting with the management and supervision of the classroom under the direction of the Program Director at the YMCA of Southern Maine - Casco Bay.

Schedule
  • 8:00am-1:00pm and occasional afternoon hours.
  • * Shifts and hours are subject to change.

Qualifications
  • Effective communication in person and by phone with employees, members, parents, children, and school personnel.
  • Customer service focus and effective interpersonal skills.

  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Reliability, dependability, and punctuality.
  • Initiative and self-motivation.
  • Meet licensing standards for childcare centers.
  • One year of experience in an age-appropriate childcare related position.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification within 3 months of hire. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Criminal background check with fingerprinting through OCFS prior to hire (paid by YMCA).
Physical Demands
  • Strength:
    Lift, pull, and push up to 25 lbs.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    Operate equipment and perform typing, writing, and filing.
  • Coordination:
    Perform tasks requiring hand‑eye coordination such as filing and stocking supplies.
  • Mobility:
    Frequently sit, walk, stand, stoop, kneel, twist, bend, and climb stairs. Respond rapidly to emergencies and maintain composure.
  • Speech:
    Articulate and communicate clearly with staff, professionals, vendors, and clients.
  • Emotional Stability:
    Manage stress from busy phones, multiple tasks, interruptions, and maintain a pleasant, professional demeanor.
Sensory Demands
  • Vision:
    Read small print and adjust focus continuously.
  • Hearing:
    Hear normal sounds and voice patterns, answer phone, and communicate with others amidst background noise.
Cognitive Demands
  • Concentration:
    Concentrate on moderate details with frequent interruption.
  • Attention Span:
    Attend to tasks for up to 45 minutes at a time.
  • Conceptualization:
    Understand and relate to ideas, interpret instructions in written or oral form.
  • Memory:
    Remember verbal and written tasks.
Essential Functions
  • Swimming with the children is required.
  • Implement an age‑appropriate curriculum encouraging all areas of development (physical, emotional, social, cognitive, etc.).
  • Complete incident and behavioral reports; provide daily feedback and review with parents as required.
  • Complete student profiles and observations regularly.
  • Ensure classroom meets all licensing standards.
  • Notify Supervisor immediately of any problems or concerns.
  • Follow HEPA and 5‑2‑1‑0 guidelines for the Healthy Living operation in your classroom.
  • Enforce all safety rules and maintain a safe environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the classroom and facility.
  • Complete all work in a timely manner, thoroughly and satisfactorily.
  • Attend required training, meetings, and monthly staff meetings as determined by supervisor and DHHS/Accreditation Standards.
  • Adhere to all Y Brand guidelines; obtain prior approval for any Y related social media from the Marketing department.
  • Learn and utilize the UKG Employee Portal consistently.
  • Other duties as required.
Safety

Consistently monitor working areas for violations of conduct or inappropriate behaviors. Provide rapid, timely, and professional responses to all accidents, incidents, and emergencies using proper techniques. Complete incident reports as needed.

Cleanliness

Maintain a professional and clean environment at the desk or work area and in surrounding work areas.

Meetings

Attend required meetings, including monthly staff meetings and required in‑service and training hours as determined by supervisor.

Punctuality/Coverage

Meet attendance, punctuality, and dependability standards. Find coverage if unable to work a shift and notify supervisor via phone call.

Brand

Wear proper YMCA attire or identification while on shift. Adhere to all Y Brand guidelines and obtain prior approval from the Advancement department for marketing and promotion materials.
