Position Overview

The Bakery Department Manager ensures that customers’ needs are met and exceeded through effective day‑to‑day management of the operations and merchandising functions for the assigned department. This role oversees department product and conditions, including preparation and display areas, back room, equipment, schematics, and inventory. The Manager leads, trains, and develops associate performance to optimize department goals.

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities
  • Provide a remarkable shopping experience by demonstrating, training, and holding associates accountable for excellent customer service.
  • Achieve department financials (sales, profit and loss, projections, metrics, and analysis) by implementing best practices and optimization strategies.
  • Lead department staff with a focus on accountability and high business performance outcomes.
  • Develop staff through annual appraisals, supervision reports, goal setting, and performance reviews.
  • Implement visual merchandising and plan B, emphasizing “fresh” presentation.
  • Utilize resources to improve productivity, flexibility, and efficiency of labor and the shopping experience.
  • Oversee schematic implementation, stocking standards, item-to-tag integrity, and back‑room organization.
  • Manage product rotation, spoils, shrink, and markdowns.
  • Ensure overall cleanliness and conditions of the department.
  • Maintain sign and price integrity.
  • Ensure bakery products are prepared according to banner guidelines and special orders meet customer requests.
  • Train staff on procedures, food preparation, packaging, safety, and departmental tools.
  • Order product using inventory systems, pre‑orders, and seasonal planning.
  • Analyze and manage product performance to maximize sales and profitability.
  • Maintain accurate department inventory.
  • Contribute to store conditions, including safety, food safety, sanitation, and asset protection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Knowledge,

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, team‑building, and training skills.
  • Strong customer service and suggestive selling ability.
  • Strong organization, administration (including financial) and math skills.
  • Knowledge of department operations and financials.
  • Knowledge of bakery products and baking/decorating techniques.
  • Knowledge of department food safety and hazardous materials rules/regulations.
  • Knowledge of visual merchandising techniques.
  • Knowledge of professional bakery equipment and tool care.
  • Knowledge of applicable union contractual agreement language.
Education

One year of college or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education, specialized training, or additional job experience.

Experience

Two years of Bakery Department experience or equivalent in a current Produce, Meat, or Center Store Department Manager role.

Other

Available to work a variety of required retail hours.

Physical Requirements

Requires standing and other physical movements on a frequent basis; requires lifting up to 40 lbs.
