Position Opening Announcement: 0.8 FTE Social Studies Teacher – Leave Replacement Position, Port Townsend High School, 2026-27 School Year. Posting Date:
March 12, 2026, Posting No. 2026-11.

This teaching assignment includes US History/AP US History (11th grade) and World History (10th grade).

Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate K-12 or 4-12, with a Social Studies/History endorsement. Multiple endorsements including Spanish, or other 6-12 content areas preferred.
  • Previous experience with Advanced Placement certification for United States History or willingness to pursue certification for 26-27 is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience of secondary Social Studies in an MTSS environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with individual students and families across grade levels.
  • Knowledge and experience with state standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize an MTSS system to adapt instruction and curriculum for a wide range of student needs, including students with identified needs in highly capable and special education.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and use assessments including a formative assessment instructional cycle, benchmark assessments, and summative assessments.
  • Excellence in communication and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of how to access and use online and open educational resources with students and families.
  • Ability to integrate mobile technologies and implement technology innovations into field-based, multi-age experiential learning activities.
  • Willingness to participate in district and state workshops, in-services, and classes relevant to providing quality teaching.
  • Compatibility with fellow staff members and strong collaboration skills.
  • Understanding and support of place-based learning.
  • Understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Understanding of inclusion and inclusionary practices in the high school setting.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop and implement a course of instruction in Social Studies for grades 10-12 in collaboration with families.
  • Plan, develop and implement enrichment, intervention and elective classes for students in grades 9-12.
  • Utilize MTSS to support student learning and growth.
  • Create a non-threatening, comfortable educational environment for a diverse student population.
  • Communicate regularly with students and families about progress and respond to questions/concerns in a timely manner, using multiple communication methods and maintaining records.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods including thematic units, project and place-based learning, and student-directed learning to support partnerships.
  • Provide feedback, grade coursework, differentiate coursework, and support students in all curriculum areas to meet goals.
  • Diagnose and prescribe instructional levels for students.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate student records.
  • Develop effective techniques for improving student behavior and maintain productive learning environments.
  • Use district database programs to maintain grading and attendance records.
  • Collaborate with school, district, community staff, families and students to meet identified needs.
  • Participate in short and long-term instructional planning, including customized intervention plans.
  • Maintain materials and equipment and manage orders and inventories as required.
  • Collaborate to plan and deliver maritime and place-based learning aligned with the district’s mission and vision.
  • Support students and families in engaging with learning throughout the week and outside classroom time to ensure progress.
  • Work in team settings and cooperate with program and building certificated and classified staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Collaborate with staff on needs of students with IEPs, 504 plans, and Highly Capable learners.
