The Library Media and Garden Teacher is a certificated teacher who serves as an instructional leader, collaborative partner, and information specialist for the Salish Coast Elementary learning community. This role integrates literacy, culture and love of reading, digital literacy (digital citizenship, media literacy) and STEM (science, technology, mathematics, and engineering) through Place Based Learning with coordinated instruction in the library and teaching garden.
Primary focus will be library instruction. Garden learning units would take place throughout the year for a total of 6-7 lessons per class.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Washington State teaching certificate with K-8 endorsement.
- Library Media Endorsement (or planned enrollment in endorsement program)
- Background or experience in Garden/STEM education and inquiry-based science instruction
- Experience or interest in outdoor, garden-based, or experiential learning preferred.
- Strong collaboration, organization, and communication skills
- Applicants with knowledge/experience of RTI, PBIS and MTSS are preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to create and use a variety of instructional and assessment strategies and the ability to adapt instruction and curriculum to meet a wide range of student abilities including highly capable and special education students.
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed teaching practices.
- Demonstrated successful experience in actively collaborating with colleagues to improve instructional practice and ensure aligned curriculum.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development; as evidenced by participation in building, district and state workshops, staff development, and recent course work relevant to effective teaching.
- Demonstrated knowledge of technology for the classroom, and the ability to implement such technology.
- Demonstrated compatibility with fellow staff members, students and parents.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving school goals.
- Demonstrated successful experience in promoting and fostering a positive attitude.
- Knowledge and experience with project-based or place-based learning preferred.
- Plan, develop and implement a successful course of instruction and assessment
- Design learning experiences for students that are aligned with Port Townsend Schools vision and Salish Coast mission and goals.
- Teach engaging, differentiated instruction weekly to all elementary classes (Preschool–Grade
5) in literacy, information literacy, and/or teaching garden–based STEM learning. - Develop and modify instructional programs to meet individual needs of all assigned students.
- Develop and implement effective positive techniques for improving and/or managing student behavior; actively participate in successful implementation of school wide social emotional learning programs.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and intervention to individual students as necessary.
- Design and implement age-appropriate, hands-on lessons that integrate classroom science standards, nutrition education, and place-based learning through use of the school’s teaching garden.
- Engage students in real-world problem solving connected to environmental systems, plant science, sustainability, and local food systems.
- Provide strong classroom and outdoor learning management for students ages 4–11, ensuring safe, inclusive, and productive learning environments.
- Connect teaching garden lessons to district place-based learning approaches.
