Applicants seeking Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) certification under the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) Law Enforcement Academy are invited to apply. The City of Port St. Lucie is an equal‑opportunity employer.
OverviewThe primary function is to attend the Indian River State College Police Academy as a Contractual Non‑Sworn Police Cadet. The Cadet shall successfully complete all approved academy courses, pass the State Certification Exam, and meet all certification requirements.
Essential Duties- Attend all scheduled classes, lectures, demonstrations, and exercises and successfully complete all approved academy courses.
- Train on‑the‑job by performing routine work assignments in the functional area for which training is prescribed.
- Perform other duties of similar nature or level in a classroom setting.
- Engage in no disciplinary activities while attending the academy.
- Satisfy all qualifications and requirements for employment by the City as a Police Officer.
- Take, and pass, the State Certification Exam within thirty (30) days of academy completion or within the prescribed timeframe set by the Division Captain.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Actively pursuing acceptance into a CJSTC Law Enforcement Academy.
- Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Florida Law Enforcement Certification – preferred and required after academy graduation.
- Pass state drug screening.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively; determine proper course of action.
- Handle situations firmly, courteously, and with respect for others’ rights.
- Learn city geography and social characteristics.
- Understand and execute verbal and written instructions.
- Meet physical requirements and standards.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the public.
- Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
- Maintain a positive outlook in all situations.
- Model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
- Stay centered under challenge.
- Work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Follow through with assigned tasks.
Work requires frequent walking, reaching, and lifting of up to 15 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are essential. Noise level is usually moderate.
