The starting salary range for this position is $27.09 – $31.15, depending on qualifications. Responsible technical work inspecting and monitoring contractors during city construction projects and commercial projects (road, drainage, landscaping, irrigation, and water/sewer). Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the city. This position is considered an “essential position” for the purpose of emergency management. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed.

This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during city of port st. Lucie emergencies, as determined by city administrators, emergency manager or city officials.

  • keeps the mission, vision, and values of the city of port st.   • reviews and interprets construction plans.
  • inspects and monitors the construction of certain capital improvement projects (road, drainage, and water/sewer). Notes and reports any deficiencies.
  • interprets plans and specifications for deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
  • measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations and layouts.
  • inspects and monitors all restoration efforts related to excavations: backfill, compaction, concrete/asphalt repairs.
  • prepares field sketches as needed.
  • inspects on‑site drainage and on‑site paving aspects of commercial construction projects.
  • makes field checks, prepares reports, maintains records, prepares quantity take‑offs as needed.
  • maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities.
  • examines workmanship of finished installations for conformity to regulatory standards and approves installation.
  • may prepare sketches of construction installations that deviate from plans and reports such changes for incorporation on master plans or as‑built drawings.
  • investigates and addresses complaints arising from assigned city projects.
  • may be required to work hours other than standard day shift.
  • works during emergency situations as required.

minimum qualifications

education and/or experience

graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience involving civil engineering and/or related construction and inspection or construction project supervision required. Experience in roadway, sidewalk and stormwater construction inspection is required.

certificates, licenses, registrations
  • possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.
  • florida stormwater, erosion, and sedimentation control inspector training & certification required, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
