Pays $26.94 - $32.16 per hour.

The base pay range for this position is $26.94 - $32.16. It is the City's practice to start employees at the lower end of the salary range. This position is eligible for education pay. The pay range for an employee holding an Associate's is $27.21 - $32.48 and for an employee holding a Bachelor's is $27.48 - $32.80, This position is eligible for bilingual pay for employees certified fluent in Spanish, Tagalog, Korean, or American Sign Language.

The pay range for the bilingual premium is $27.48 - $32.80. This position is also eligible for longevity pay, with an increase of 0.25% each year the employee is employed with the City, starting on year 5. An employee completing a 47 year career with the City would expect to make $35.78 in the last year of employment based on 2026 numbers, for a salary range of $26.94 - $35.78.

Taking these numbers into account, the salary for this position could ultimately range between $26.94 - $36.42 based on the 2026 pay scale, with the upper pay appropriate to an employee holding a Bachelor's, bilingual certified, and with 47 years of longevity pay.

Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. HRA VEBA account may also be provided. Retirement benefits include a choice between PERS 2 or 3 and optional Deferred Compensation. The City recognizes 10 paid holidays and provides 2 personal holidays annually. Vacation leave is accrued on a prorated monthly basis with 80 hours a year earned the first year and increases thereafter.

Major Function and Purpose

This is an entry-level position that performs a range of supportive utility and maintenance duties as needed to keep the Public Works Department operating efficiently.

General Function

Under general direction of the Supervisor and Leads, this position performs meter reading; assists with landscape and stormwater maintenance; and works with Public Works crews on field maintenance and operations in street rights-of-way.

This is a non-supervisory position.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Accordingly, individuals occupying this position will be required to follow any job-related instructions, tasks, or other duties as assigned by the Director or designee, and must be able to proficiently perform all assigned duties.

  • Competently operate a variety of tools and power equipment including power driven machinery, rotating machinery, and hand tools.
  • Assist with stormwater maintenance by pulling weeds, clearing debris, and mowing grass.
  • Clean buildings and parking lots.
  • Assist Public Works crews with field maintenance and operations, right-of-way (ROW) clearing, etc.
  • Accurately read meters using pre-determined routes and schedules.
  • Provide meter reading data to Finance staff in a timely manner to ensure utility billing schedules are met.
  • Assist operators in the performance of water and sewer operations.
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the Public Works shop by cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and washing.
  • Move boxes of supplies and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Assist with the duties of Maintenance Technician II as directed
  • Reliable and regular attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned

The Maintenance Technician I has extensive contact with City employees and the public.

Working Conditions

Work is performed either indoors or outdoors in all types of weather conditions. May be required to work in noisy work areas.
