Position: WDVA Maintenance Mechanic 1, Full-Time, Non-Perm, Washington Veterans Home

Overview

Washington Veterans Home – Maintenance Mechanic 1 (Full-Time, Non-Permanent). This position performs mechanical and facility repairs, grounds maintenance (lawn care, landscaping, watering), carpentry and plumbing work, and related duties to keep the facility safe, beautiful, and enjoyable for Veteran residents. The position is expected to last less than 6 months.

We serve Veterans and strive to fulfill our mission of “Serving Those Who Served.” This role supports the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) in maintaining our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla.

Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical, and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, lawn mowers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs on building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry, and kitchen equipment, motors, and electrical appliances.
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Mow, irrigate, fertilize, and maintain lawns.
  • Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as weed trimmers, backpack blowers, light tractors, and lawn mowers.
  • Plant, transplant, trim, and water plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Move furniture and equipment for various departments and physical plant shops.
  • Assist with phones, TVs, medical equipment, or other electronics as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager and Maintenance Mechanic 2 and 3.
Qualifications Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write, and speak English.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Ability to use appropriate tools.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair structures to maintain usability.
  • Ability to read commercial blueprints and apply building codes through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
Special Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.
  • Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical effort for tasks such as moving furniture and equipment; lift up to 60 lbs and may push/pull/carry objects over 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work with continuous standing and walking; frequent lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending; repetitive motion of hands and arms; and gripping with hands.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by applicable safety standards. Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
  • Must successfully complete mandatory orientation and all required training within mandated time frames.
  • Must become familiar with and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees and maintain regular attendance and reliability.
  • Candidates must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship for a visa now or in the future.
