Comments: When working in environments where de-escalation, isolation, and restraint training is required, employees will be compensated at a rate of an additional $0.50 per hour (elementary) or $0.75 per hour (secondary).

Purpose Statement

The job of Para educator – Emotional Behavior Support Program (EBSP) is to provide support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in general education or self-contained classrooms; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel;

and attending IEP meetings.

Job is distinguished by supporting students with clinically significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Assist students, teachers, and other certificated personnel with implementation of instruction and IEPs.
  • Attend meetings and trainings (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de-escalation training) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Develop, under supervision, instruction to students in individual and group activities (academic subjects, daily living, physical, communication, behavior/social skills) to evaluate progress on IEP objectives and ensure student success.
  • Implement, under supervision, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to present and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times following HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines per district, state, and federal laws.
  • Maintain instructional materials and records to ensure availability, provide written reference, and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments for a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Observe and collect information to be recorded via data sheets to support the progress of individual student goals and objectives.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (data collection, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing and organizing materials) to document student progress and support classroom activities related to learning goals and objectives.
  • Supervise students in school settings to maintain safety and positivity.
  • Work under direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines for a safe and positive learning environment.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned; may be assigned as a 1:1 para educator for efficient functioning of the work unit.
