Job Description

The Para educator – Emotional Behavior Support Program (EBSP) is responsible for providing support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom, with a specific focus on assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students. The role includes implementing classroom activities, monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom times, providing data to instruction personnel, attending IEP meetings, and supporting students with clinically significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support classroom objectives.
  • Assist students, teachers, and other certificated personnel in implementing instruction and/or IEPs.
  • Attend meetings and trainings (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de‑escalation training) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Develop instructional content under the supervision of the assigned teacher for individual and group activities, evaluating student progress on IEP objectives.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines.
  • Maintain instructional materials and electronic files to ensure availability and compliance with mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods across various school environments to maintain safety and positivity.
  • Observe and collect data to support progress toward student goals and objectives.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance, including data entry, correspondence, copying, filing, and material preparation, to document student progress.
  • Supervise students in the school setting to maintain a safe environment.
  • Work under both direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including potential assignment as a 1:1 para educator to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Require adherence to safety practices, operation of standard office equipment, preparation and maintenance of accurate records, basic math proficiency, understanding of written and oral instructions, instructional procedures, conflict resolution, and de‑escalation strategies.

Responsibility

Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; and utilize resources from other work units as needed.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity, and a mix of sitting (30%), walking (30%), and standing (40%). The job involves exposure to risk of injury and illness.

Experience and Education

Job related experience is desired.

Education (Preferred): Para educator Certificate Program

Education (Minimum): At least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.

In addition, a para educator must meet one of the following:

  • Have received a passing score on the Para Pro assessments.
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher from an accredited college or university.
