Pay: $50.30 to $58.33 per hour. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; HRA VEBA account may also be provided. Retirement benefits include a choice between PERS 2 or 3 and optional Deferred Compensation. The City recognizes 11 paid holidays and provides up to 2 personal holidays annually. Vacation leave is accrued at 0.0385 hours per straight‑time hour paid in the first 2 years of employment, with increases thereafter.

Under the direction of the Deputy Director Community Development, performs mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire inspections of commercial and residential buildings and construction sites, as well as plan review as needed.
General FunctionThe Plans Examiner/Building Inspector III performs a variety of duties related to residential and commercial development including inspection of commercial and residential construction projects and interpretation of applicable building, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and environmental codes. Work involves examining installation methods, materials, and construction details of commercial, multifamily, and single‑family structures to verify compliance with standards, codes, regulations, and approved plans; providing information concerning construction codes and requirements;
preparing reports; and operating inspection tracking software and reporting systems.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct field inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with the International Code Council (ICC) Building, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fire Codes, State Energy, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality and Barrier Free Codes, as well as other state laws and City of Port Orchard ordinances and policies.
- Read and interpret architectural drawings, site plans, topography, and structural drawings with actual construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
- Recommend interpretations of adopted codes.
- Review architectural and structural plans for compliance with adopted technical codes, evaluate proposals for new materials, conduct research regarding new products and materials for code compliance, and prepare correction notices when appropriate.
- Explain codes, policies, and procedures to the developers, contractors, architects, engineers, and other members of the public at the front counter, over the phone, in the field and in writing.
- Respond to and/or address construction compliance concerns and assist in developing policies and procedures.
- Maintain notes, files, and records documenting inspections and related work.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Act in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
- Prepare written documentation with clearly organized thoughts to advise applicants of plan and design constructions.
- Research potential solutions to problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings and building construction.
- Maintain knowledge of changes in construction codes and review professional code books, journals, and ordinances to verify and interpret applicable codes.
- Respond in a timely and professional manner to members of the public and contractors.
- Attend and represent the department at meetings as directed.
- Reliable and regular attendance is required.

This position has contact in person, via telephone, electronic communication, or through written correspondence with citizens, various City departments and their personnel, planning groups and agencies, contractors, and design professionals. Will collaborate and coordinate workload with Building Inspector I, Plans Examiner/Building Inspector II, and/or outside consultants.
