In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Fraser Health Mission and Values, the Registered Nurse provides direct nursing care to patients recovering from anaesthetics within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). This includes assessing, planning, providing, coordinating and evaluating nursing care in collaboration with the interprofessional care team.
Responsibilities- Assess post anaesthetic patients by collecting and evaluating information from multiple sources; formulate nursing diagnoses and plan, perform, evaluate and document nursing interventions and care.
- Provide nursing care to address critical care needs per physicians’ and anaesthetists’ orders, following standards and hospital policies; initiate immediate treatment as required and modify care as needed.
- Communicate with the interdisciplinary care team; collaborate with physicians, licensed practical nurses, patient care coordinators, clinical nurse educators, and other providers to adjust care plans as patient conditions change.
- Coordinate nursing care for the patient; set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and refer to the interprofessional team as per protocols and practice standards.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment by adhering to infection control principles; be familiar with fire and other emergency procedures.
- Establish therapeutic relationships, demonstrate empathy and respect, advocate for patient privacy, dignity and informed decision making.
- Document assessments, diagnoses, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes and referrals per standards and Fraser Health procedures.
- Participate in nursing committees, care conferences and councils as assigned or agreed with the Manager.
- Participate in research and quality improvement activities; identify care issues, collect data and contribute to changes in practices or protocols.
- Attend in-services and educational programs; identify learning goals and maintain current clinical competence in the practice area.
- Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students; contribute to orientation and sharing of care activities.
- Provide feedback to the Manager regarding the effectiveness of patient care programs, policy/clinical decision tools, and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
One year of recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of post-graduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
