Safety Professional

Primary Job Responsibility:

The Safety Professional is responsible for supporting and continuously improving the site's Health and Safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, corporate standards, and industry best practices.

Description of

Job Duties:

  • Act as the site Subject Matter Expert for occupational safety and health systems and requirements.
  • Develop, update, and implement safety policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Manage required recordkeeping and reporting to internal stakeholders and external agencies.
  • Provide safety support for turnaround projects and contractor management activities.
  • Deliver safety training to new hires, contractors, and employees; facilitate face‑to‑face refresher and specialty training.
  • Conduct and support safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments; ensure timely closure of findings.
  • Lead or participate in incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, reports, and regulatory records.
  • Maintain and update the Safety Compliance Calendar to ensure timely completion of required activities.
  • Analyze data from audits, inspections, hazard review, and incidents to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain safety performance metrics and utilize scored audit systems to track progress and effectiveness.
  • Conduct Facility monthly Supervisor Safety Meetings and quarterly Site Management Reviews to communicate leading and lagging indicators, share lessons learned, and align on improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in the Management of Change (MOC) process to help ensure projects are planned and executed with effective safety controls and provide support during pre‑startup safety reviews.

Level II – additional job duties include:

  • Lead and champion the site's Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), focusing on cultural enhancements and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the site's Emergency Response Program, aligning with the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) Incident Command System.
  • Coordinate, plan, and facilitate all annual and quarterly Emergency Response Team (ERT) training, including site‑led and third‑party training, as well as annual evacuation drills.
  • Coordinate and oversee annual rope rescue training activities.
  • Serve as the primary Facility Security Officer, maintaining and reviewing the Facility Security Plan and Facility Response Plan on an annual basis.
  • Ensure quarterly and annual security and oil spill response drills are conducted per the requirements of 33 CFR 154.
  • Act as the main point of contact during inspections and audits by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Texas General Land Office (GLO).

Required Knowledge / Skills /

Experience:

  • Degree in Health and Safety, related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in Health and Safety roles.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable governmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA) and industry best practices.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for training, procedure writing, and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with safety management systems.

Preferred

Skills:

  • Professional certification such Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent.
  • Experience at a Process Safety Management (PSM) facility.
  • Exposure to Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and emergency response planning.
