Overview
This is skilled work at the journeyman level servicing, maintaining, fabricating, and repairing power plant facilities, structures, and mechanical equipment. This position is within the City of Gainesville and Gainesville Regional Utilities, with a professional development program for the Power Plant Mechanic position. Salary and classification are determined based on education, experience, and training of selected candidates.
Responsibilities- Services, repairs, overhauls, and maintains a wide variety of power plant equipment and structures.
- Performs limited welding, acetylene burning, brazing, and soldering.
- Maintains combustion turbines, coal conveyors and drive mechanisms, crushing equipment, scales, pulleys, belts, idlers, drives, and filtering equipment.
- Operates coal unloading, processing, reclaim facilities, fly and bottom ash handling equipment, dust suppression, and related systems.
- Ensures compliance with MSDS information for products and handles/stores items properly.
- Observes tag out and lockout procedures for plant equipment and systems.
- Attends training courses and completes established objectives for craft areas at journey level.
- Records and reports malfunctions, maintains control logs, and performs carpentry, painting, plumbing, and metal fabrication tasks as needed.
- Responds to emergency conditions and attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
- Assists in coal unloading and processing operations and with training of Power Plant Trainees and Apprentice Mechanics as directed.
- Participates in safety-related emergencies, egress, and spill incident training as required.
- Services, repairs, overhauls, and maintains power plant equipment and structures.
- Performs welding, brazing, soldering, and related metalwork.
- Maintains and supports combustion turbines, coal handling systems, conveyors, and associated equipment.
- Operates unloading, processing, reclaim, and ash handling equipment and systems.
- Complies with MSDS requirements and maintains proper handling and storage of materials.
- Follows tag out and lockout procedures and maintains related documentation.
- Completes training objectives and maintains required logs and records.
- Performs carpentry, painting, plumbing, piping, metal fabrication, and HVAC-related tasks.
- Responds to emergency conditions and maintains regular attendance.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school or an acceptable equivalency diploma; completion of all requirements in progression-through-training programs for Power Plant Trainee and Power Plant Mechanic Apprentice; or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. - PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Millwright skills preferred. - Must meet minimum Craft and Safety Training established for the designated journey program within the progression-through-training guidelines.
- Ability to use personal protective equipment (hearing, eye, foot, hand, heat, and respiratory protection including self-contained breathing units) as required by OSHA regulations.
- Ability to work at heights over 100 feet on open grating or from aerial devices; exposure to high noise levels; physical strength and agility to lift/carry/push/pull 50 pounds without assistance; ability to communicate, see, and hear effectively.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying climate conditions, extreme heat, or confined spaces with special equipment as needed; weight and girth limitations may apply to equipment and facilities.
