Environmental Engineer, Operations Manager
Underground Nickel-Copper | Michigan's Upper Peninsula, USA
Relocation Package & Initial Accommodation Provided
This is a front-row seat to one of the most significant critical minerals stories unfolding in the United States —
and a clear pathway to Mine Manager.
Mine Werx Global Consulting has been selected as partner to identify 'the'
Mine Operations Superintendent for the only primary nickel mine operating in the United States. This underground hard rock operation sits at the centre of a rapidly expanding domestic critical minerals platform backed by Department of Defense and Department of Energy funding
, with a mandate to reduce America's dependence on foreign-sourced nickel.
The Mine Manager promotion pathway is real and near-term
. Our client is building a leadership pipeline, and the successful candidate will be positioned as the successor to the Mine Manager role as the company's multi-asset strategy matures.
Reporting to the Mine Manager, you'll lead both surface and underground operations with three General Supervisors (underground ops, surface ops, and development/projects) reporting directly to you.
You’ll be accountable for:
- Safe, efficient execution of all mining activities across a ~480-person operation
- Mine life extension strategies and transition planning for satellite deposit development
- Budget ownership, equipment optimisation, and production target delivery
- MSHA compliance and visible safety leadership
- Coaching and developing front-line supervisors and building high-performing teams
This operation has recently undergone a transformative acquisition
, consolidating a producing mine, processing mill, a near-mine discovery 8 miles away, and a 400,000-acre exploration package under one company —
alongside a second major U.S. Midwest nickel-copper project. You won’t just be running an operation; you’ll be helping shape the future of domestic nickel production.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE - The company's pipeline includes a world-class nickel-copper-cobalt discovery in Minnesota currently progressing through environmental review, with intercepts of 47 metres grading 11% nickel and 11% copper n that project moves to construction, the person leading operations today in Michigan will be first in line to shape what comes next.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR- Underground hard rock mining experience is essential (minimum 10 years in mine operations)
- At least 5 years in an operations or technical services leadership role
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline preferred
- MSHA knowledge or equivalent underground mining safety regulatory experience
A note to Technical Services leaders
: if you’re looking to make the move into senior operations management
, this is exactly the kind of role that rounds a career. The combination of a high-grade underground operation, a defined but extendable mine life, and a clear promotion pathway to Mine Manager makes this a rare entry point.
We want to hear from you.
This is not a role for coal mining backgrounds
. We need hard rock underground experience — nickel, copper, gold, zinc, or similar commodities.
The U.S. imports the vast majority of its nickel — essential for EV batteries, defence, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
This operation represents one of the few credible pathways to domestic self-sufficiency. Recent exploration success at a nearby discovery, with geology mirroring the original deposit,
adds genuine long-term upside to an already compelling platform story.
This is a career-defining moment. The opportunity to lead operations at the only producing nickel mine in the United States — with a clear path to Mine Manager — does not come along often.
WHAT'S ON OFFER- Competitive salary commensurate with the significance of the role
- Comprehensive relocation package and initial accommodation provided
- Performance incentives tied to operational outcomes
- Near-term pathway to Mine Manager
The U.P. sits between three Great Lakes and offers a quality of life most mining jurisdictions can't match. Over 300 waterfalls, millions of acres of forest, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore,…
