Job Description

Building: Garfield Elementary School

Position: Special Education / CI Para educator

Qualifications: See Posting

As partners in the instructional process, para educators who work in programs supported by Title I/31a funds must meet one of the following requirements of 1-5 on the qualifications list below.

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education, or Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of

    Education:
  • Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
  • A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence‑based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam
  • ETS Paraprofessional Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
  • Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.

Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require #1, plus one or more of 2-5 above achieved prior to being hired.

Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental characteristic of learners with mental impairments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with the students, parents, and staff.
  • Must be willing to provide assistance and instruction in the area of personal hygiene, toileting, health and fitness, and community living.
  • Must be willing to participate in field trips and home visits when necessary.
  • Be available to attend summer or after‑school in‑services which pertain to meeting the needs of mentally impaired learners.
  • Understand and respect the students’ privacy rights as provided by FERPA.
  • Possess the ability to promote positive self‑esteem and encourage academic growth.
  • Demonstrate good judgment to provide for the safety of all students and staff.
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to respond to changes in assignment in emergency situations as determined by the building principal.
  • Perform other related duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
  • Provide physical strength and stamina for no‑violent intervention when necessary.

  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner commensurate with the position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
