Digital Scholarship Lab – Student Communication Assistant

Student Library Assistant II (4)

The Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL) at Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries is looking for a motivated student to assist with internal and external communication through DSL social media, newsletters, and website.

The DSL is a unit that facilitates the transformative use of digital technologies in teaching, learning, and research  offer spaces, services, and expertise that support immersive visualization, digital scholarship, and research data management. The DSL has specialized technology such as the 360 Room, virtual reality, Anatomage table, digitization equipment, 3D scanners, and software for digital scholarship projects, including audio and visual editing, photo editing, GIS, and data analysis.

The DSL also has reservable Collaborative Project Rooms to support group work or individual study.

Reporting to the DSL Coordinator, the Student Communication Assistant supports students, staff, and faculty, including DSL student employees, with internal and external communication about DSL programs, services, and events.

The Student Communication Assistant prepares social media content, writes stories and develops materials for the DSL website, assists with communication over the DSL listserv, and monitors various DSL communication channels. The Student Communication Assistant assists DSL student employees in the development of communication materials and receives approval as needed from the DSL Operations Coordinator.

Typical duties performed by the Student Communication Assistant

  • Develop content for and manage the DSL’s social media accounts.
  • Draft regular announcements and messages for the DSL listserv.
  • Maintain and update stories for the DSL website.
  • Assist with the DSL public events calendar.
  • Attend DSL events to document and share with the community.
  • Attend regular communication meeting to coordinate external communications.
  • Draft and distribute promotional materials for programming and events using Canva and/or Adobe Creative suite
  • Perform regular duties of DSL Student Assistant, such as staffing desk, answering and making referrals for questions, assisting with room reservations, performing hourly headcount, etc.

Skill-set Sought:

  • Ability to write for a public audience.
  • Familiarity with social media and/or website technologies (Instagram, You Tube, Drupal, Lib Guides, etc).
  • Willingness to experiment and learn new technologies.
  • Ability to communicate regularly and effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Experience providing service to the public or groups.
  • Ability to follow directions, manage time effectively, and report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Using Microsoft office suite:
    Teams, Outlook, Work, Excel experience.
  • Familiarity or experience with Canva and/or Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
