Eligibility and Compensation Adjustment

Any new or returning applicant who has successfully completed a USLA standardized lifeguard academy or an EMT program successfully will be eligible for an adjustment in compensation.

Training Requirements
  • All new hires will be required to attend the 40‑hour USLA academy scheduled for May 24th, 25th, 30th, 31st and June 1st, 6th, and 7th.
  • All returning Lifeguards will be required to attend the First Aid Training scheduled for Monday, June 16th & Tuesday, June 17th.
  • New hires will be required to complete all pre‑employment requirements prior to the Lifeguard Academy scheduled for May 24, 2026. Failure to complete these requirements will result in disqualification from the employment process, in which the conditional offer will then be rescinded.
Position Descriptions Lifeguard – Ocean (Tower Assignment)

Will work under immediate direction of the Senior Lead Lifeguard and Assistant Lead Lifeguards. Assigned to a designated area of the beach to maintain watch, perform rescue work, provide first aid, enforce beach regulations, supervise swimming activities, open and close lifeguard towers, maintain equipment, write reports, and perform related duties.

Lifeguard – Ocean (JG Instructor Assignment)

Will work under the direct supervision of the Junior Lifeguard Program Coordinator and Assistant Junior Lifeguard Coordinator, assisting with implementation of the Junior Lifeguard Program. Duties include supervision, education, ensuring safety of participants, maintaining records, issuing equipment, reporting safety issues, promoting good sportsmanship, coordinating physical fitness programs, teaching participants 9‑16 years of age, and performing related duties. To be eligible, applicant must have attended a USLA accredited academy and worked a minimum of one summer as an ocean lifeguard.

Shift

and Schedule Requirements
  • Lifeguard – Ocean (Tower Assignment):
    Must be willing and available to work 2‑5 shifts per week or the equivalent 16‑40 hours on various shifts over different days/times (Monday through Sunday) of different lengths over the summer seasonal beach operation.
  • Lifeguard – Ocean (Junior Lifeguard Assignment):
    Must be willing and available to work 5 shifts per week or the equivalent 32 hours on various shifts over different days/times (Monday through Sunday) of different lengths over the summer seasonal beach operation. The first session of the Junior Lifeguard program is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15th (off on 19th);
    Monday‑Friday from June 22nd until July 10th. The second session of the Junior Lifeguard program is scheduled for Monday, July 13th until August 7th.
Agility Swim Test

RETURNING CANDIDATES AND NEW CANDIDATES who are eligible for any of the positions will be invited to a physical agility swim test scheduled for March 8, 2026 or April 12, 2026. The qualification swim for Sunday, March 8, 2026 will be held at Hueneme Beach Park, 550

E. Surfside Dr., Port Hueneme. Please bring a photo  arrive by 9:00 AM to allow for check in.

Essential Functions – Tower Assignment
  • Aids and/or rescues individuals in need of assistance; administers CPR and/or first aid, if necessary.
  • Patrols beach and enforces beach regulations. Makes safety decisions. Initiates safety contracts with the public.
  • Oversees and regulates the use of beach areas; stays aware of surf and weather conditions; advises the staff and public of beach conditions including in‑shore holes and rip currents.
  • Occasionally, supervises swimming activities at the aquatic facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
