We are delighted to host veterinary students for externships! This valuable clinical experience will let you apply classroom knowledge in an animal hospital of your choice. Our hands‑on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA‑accredited veterinary schools in their clinical years, typically meaning their 3rd or 4th year of vet school.
To make externships accessible we offer stipends to offset travel and lodging costs (unless prohibited by your veterinary school).
Eligibility Requirements- Current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
- Priority scheduling for students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit.
- Proof of professional liability insurance (SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance via the SAVMA Member Benefit link).
Veterinary Emergency Clinic is located in Port Charlotte, Florida—near Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Venice, Naples, Sarasota, and Tampa. We are one of the only emergency hospitals in the area, treating a wide variety of medical and surgical cases when daytime hospitals are closed. Our team includes 4 full‑time and 5 part‑time doctors.

Services offered:
Ultrasound, soft‑tissue surgery, emergency care.
You will actively participate in cases, develop clinical skills, and be supervised by experienced veterinarians. We encourage externs to select one case per week, research it, and participate in team discussions to enhance learning and mentorship.
