An industrial manufacturing facility is seeking a CAD / Field Technician to support inspection and engineering documentation activities across refining and chemical operations. This role will function as a flexible (“floating”) resource between multiple inspection groups, providing CAD drafting, field verification, and database support on a recurring basis. The position combines office-based drafting with regular unit walkdowns in an operating plant environment.
Key Responsibilities- Update and maintain unit plot plans, inspection isometrics, and equipment drawings in accordance with established drafting standards.
- Perform field walkdowns to sketch and document piping systems, vessels, exchangers, air coolers, and related equipment.
- Convert field sketches and construction isometrics into accurate CAD drawings aligned with departmental standards.
- Interpret and navigate Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to locate and verify piping revisions within operating units.
- Maintain project tracking documentation using Microsoft Office tools (Word and Excel).
- Support the use and ongoing maintenance of inspection database systems; training will be provided.
- Retrieve and organize project documentation from plant document control systems.
- Perform self-checks to ensure drawing accuracy and quality prior to submission.
- Collaborate with inspection, operations, and engineering personnel to support project execution.
- Follow all site safety requirements and procedures during office and field activities.
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Computer Drafting Technology or related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in refining, petrochemical, or chemical manufacturing environments (candidates with less experience but strong site exposure may be considered).
- 2–3 years of field experience performing equipment walkdowns, sketching, and CAD conversion.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Brics
CAD, or similar drafting platforms. - Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and construction isometric drawings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and standard file management tools.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate company vehicles on and off site.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety in both office and field environments.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined or restricted spaces, and in varying outdoor weather conditions with appropriate PPE.
- Extensive unit or field experience within operating process facilities.
- Familiarity with inspection or asset integrity database systems (e.g., PCMS, piping integrity software, or document management platforms).
- Experience marking up P&IDs to define system boundaries.
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
- Combination of office and field work within an operating industrial facility.
- Regular weekly field visits throughout the year.
- Personal protective equipment and required safety gear provided.
- Standard schedule:
Monday through Thursday, four 10-hour days (typically early morning start). Fridays are non-working days.
