The City of Poquoson is seeking a skilled and safety‑focused Equipment Operator II to perform a variety of skilled tasks in support of our Public Works operations. This is a Full‑Time / Non‑Exempt position, grade 10 and the salary range is $46,523 - $73,408. General

Definition of Work

Performs skilled trades work operating commercial solid waste collection truck, boom truck, street sweeper, garbage packer and related equipment, performing minor maintenance duties on equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Public Works. Divisional oversight is exercised over grounds workers.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Essential Functions
  • Removes bulk trash and landscaping materials; performs and oversees general infrastructure maintenance on streets, street signs and drainage projects.
  • Performs equipment maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Participates in safety and other required training.
  • Other duties as assigned/required/requested.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; skill in the operation of automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment;

ability to read and write; good physical condition; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience working with heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision;

vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through verbal communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;

work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).

Special Requirements
  • Forklift Instructor within one year of hire.
  • Flagger's License within six months of hire.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
