The City of Poquoson is seeking a dependable and experienced Crew Leader to supervise and participate in daily Public Works operations. This position provides hands-on leadership to assigned crews while ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with City standards. This is a Full-Time, Exempt position, grade 12 and the salary ranges from $49,714 - $78,512 dependent upon experience and qualifications.

Performs difficult skilled trades work operating all heavy construction and automotive equipment in the maintenance and repair of storm water drainage lines and streets, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Public Works. Divisional supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department.
Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Essential Functions- Supervises and performs road maintenance including repairing potholes, completing driveway tie-ins, lays stone on shoulders and driveways.
- Supports drainage efforts by cleaning leaves or trash out of ditches.
- Performs sink hole repair including digging up pipe and patching holes.
- Works with other departments as needed.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions;
mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- High school diploma or GED and moderate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms;
work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through verbal communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;
work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock;
work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Pesticide License within six months.
- Flagging license within six months.
- Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement or be able to obtain within six months of hire.
- Forklift certification within six months of hire.
