The City of Poquoson is seeking a highly skilled and experienced City Engineer to lead and manage the City’s engineering functions and public infrastructure initiatives. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of municipal infrastructure while supporting the City’s long‑term growth and resilience.

The City Engineer is responsible for directing, managing, and overseeing all engineering services for the City, including capital improvement projects, stormwater management, transportation infrastructure, drainage systems, and development plan review. The position serves as the City’s technical authority on engineering matters and works collaboratively with City leadership, departments, consultants, regulatory agencies, and the public.

• Comprehensive knowledge of municipal engineering principles and practices.
• Comprehensive knowledge of laws and administrative policies governing professional civil engineering.
• Ability to analyze, define and determine the most cost‑effective solutions to the City’s technical problems.
• Thorough knowledge of mathematics, physical and applied sciences, properties of materials and fundamentals of engineering design in the fields of hydrology, hydraulics, transportation, and environmental issues.
• Ability to perform engineering economic analyses and complex calculations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the general public.
• Ability to plan, assign and coordinate the work of subordinate personnel.
• Ability to prepare clean and comprehensive technical studies and reports.
• Ability to communicate ideas effectively, verbally and in writing.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment.
• Supervisory or project management experience is strongly preferred.

• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications and experience. Pay scale ranges from $84,944 – $134,876. The City of Poquoson offers a comprehensive benefits package, including retirement, health insurance, paid leave, and holidays.
