As a Court Deputy, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of Oakland County's courts and facilities while supporting the justice system.

What You'll Do

* Perform security and law enforcement functions in the Oakland County Courthouse, County Complex Buildings, District Courts, and Contracted Courts.

* Operate stationary x-ray machines and handheld metal detectors to screen for weapons and unauthorized objects.

* Conduct visual inspections of bags, packages, and personal items.

* Provide security in courtrooms, judges' chambers, probation departments, cashier areas, and courthouse perimeters including parking lots.

* Deliver first aid and first response firefighting services until specialized units arrive.

* Respond to emergencies and assist in making arrests.

* Use countywide and department-specific software to complete reports and assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Be a High School graduate or have certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development Test (GED).

1. a. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time work experience as an Oakland County Sheriff's Office Corrections Deputy; OR

b. Possess current MCOLES license OR be currently attending a Police Academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES); OR

NOTE:

Must have successfully completed the police academy and be eligible to be licensed prior to the date of hire.

Have at least two (2) years of full-time work experience as a Federal Law Enforcement Agent; OR

c. Be an Oakland County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputy, Marine Deputy or Mounted Deputy and have completed 1,000 hours of service; OR

d. Successful completion of a Reserve Police Academy and completion of 1,000 hours of service; OR

e. Have two (2) years of full-time work experience as a Corrections Officer.

2. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

3. Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law. Generally, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying).

4. Have at least 20/20 corrected vision with both eyes and have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.

5. Have normal corrected hearing in each ear, per Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

Must maintain firearms qualification and deputy status.

A background investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, credit criminal, military or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff's Office before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision.

Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.

WHEN ASSIGNED TO COURTS OR OTHER SATELLITE LOCATIONS

Deputies will operate stationary x-ray machine and hand-held metal detectors located in the courthouse lobbies to screen visitors for weapons and unauthorized objects. Deputies will direct the flow of traffic through the inspection area.

Performs visual inspections of briefcases, purses, packages, etc., and examines these items using hand held metal detectors as necessary.

Checks identification for individuals authorized to carry weapons. Secures firearms in weapon storage areas (lock boxes) or directs individuals to secure weapons and oversees this process.

On occasion may have to search individuals for concealed weapons and/or contraband.
