Position Purpose

The Patient Support Technician functions as a collaborative member of the health care team in partnership with and under supervision of the Registered Nurse, utilizing principles of Relationship-Based Care. Performs direct patient care to a specific group of patients and coordinates activities related to unit processes. Actively supports the activities of the unit-based shared governance council and promotes organizational commitment and excellence in patient care experience.

Functions
  • Demonstrates principles of Relationship-Based Care to cultivate therapeutic relationships within an interdisciplinary care team.
  • Provides patient care that respects patients' rights, dignity, values, culture, and expressed needs; helps relieve pain, provide comfort, and alleviate anxiety.
  • Performs basic bedside care and selected procedures under supervision of the Registered Nurse (e.g., venipuncture, 12 lead EKG, basic blood glucose collection and monitoring, basic respiratory care, dressing changes, vital signs, reporting life-threatening conditions).
  • Performs activities of daily living (ADL) appropriate to the patient’s condition under RN supervision.
  • Initiates and maintains patient medical records; manages unit communication with physicians, other departments, and visitors.
  • Maintains patient roster/census and ready beds; assists with patient education under RN direction.

  • Performs basic nutritional support (bed setup, feeding assistance, intake and calorie count as appropriate).

  • Assists with admission processes by collecting assessment data and informing patient/family of unit routines.
  • Delivers individualized care aligned with the plan of care under RN supervision.
  • Engages in unit-based committees and activities that promote safety, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to the RN promptly; follows proper body mechanics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may vary by unit and patient needs, including nonclinical duties to support the care team.
  • Maintains understanding and commitment to Trinity Health Oakland’s mission and values; adheres to applicable laws, integrity program, and ethical standards.
  • Supports revenue management and charge capture practices; assists with equipment tracking and maintenance; proficient with electronic health records documentation.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Preferably at least one of the following:

  • 6 months direct patient care experience within the past 5 years.
  • Completion of one Medical/Surgical clinical rotation in a nursing educational program.
  • Completion of a Patient Care Technician program that includes an externship in an acute care facility.
  • Previous Health Unit Coordinator/Unit Secretary experience.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED or equivalent. Preferred: completion of one of the following:

  • Certification program that includes a Medical/Surgical rotation.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
