DescriptionAdvanced EMTs work in the Emergency Department providing timely emergency care as part of the healthcare team. You will collaborate with Registered Nurses and physicians to assess patient status, implement therapeutic measures, and educate patients and families.

Assist in providing patient care in collaboration with the healthcare team, as directed and supervised by a Registered Nurse. Work as a member of an identified emergency medical team, contributing to assessment of patient status, planning of care, implementation of nursing care activities, patient/family teaching, and evaluation of patient response to treatment through observation.

- Education
- Graduation from an accredited Advanced EMT Program
- Licensure / Certification
- Current State of Michigan Paramedic License
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Special Skill / Aptitudes
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, family, staff, physicians, and a variety of hospital personnel
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information, and to be tactful, diplomatic, and flexible in a changing environment
- Ability to take direction as a member of the healthcare team, and anticipate the needs of patients, staff, and physicians
- Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups
- Experience
- 1 year of road experience as a paramedic
- Perform selected therapeutic and preventative emergency care measures such as taking vital signs, performing CPR, controlling bleeding, assisting in treatment of shock, applying splints, performing venipuncture, and placing IV catheters.
- Assist in assessment and identification of patients’ basic problems and needs through observation and questioning of patients, relatives, and/or medical personnel; assist in patient transfer within the Emergency Department; report patient care events and changes in condition to the RN in a timely manner.
- Seek guidance as needed to adjust care based on evaluation of treatments and patient response; collect data on patient knowledge, motivation, and skills for self‑care.
- Identify resources for patients to meet self‑care deficits; report observed patient needs to the RN and physician.
- Contribute to the plan of nursing care with the RN and consider patient requests in the care plan; assist patients to meet learning needs relative to maintenance of self within the hospital environment; teach correct procedures and techniques to patients.
- Maintain records of injury/illness, treatment provided, and other relevant information for inclusion in the medical record.
- Record results of intervention in the electronic health record (EHR); assist RN as indicated in research activities, special projects, and other duties as assigned.
