Description:
Administers respiratory care procedures and related duties as prescribed by a physician, including nasal oxygen therapy, nebulized medications, ECGs, inpatient transports, nocturnal pulse oximetry studies, and other applicable procedures.
Note: For Respiratory Therapy students only who have completed the theory and clinical module in P & PD and/or non-invasive ventilation such as BIPAP/CPAP successfully in school and have established Tr RC competency. Will establish and maintain applicable Respiratory Care competency.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
- Uses "AIDET" principles when interfacing/treating every patient throughout the organization. (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You).
- Where appropriate, uses the concept of "Managing Up" to position information, a person, or team in a positive manner.
- Provides a consistent experience to patients, families, visitors and internal customers by using "Key Words at Key Times" to help patients understand care, help internal customers understand service, and build relationships.
- Obtains required medications according to prescription.
- Treats patient in accordance with NMT policy; monitors patient response to therapy and records in the electronic medical record.
- Performs suctioning procedures as needed.
- Performs non-invasive measurement of oxygen saturation via pulse oximetry and documents results in the EMR; notifies appropriate personnel.
- Serves as member of the Code Blue Team and follows direction during code events.
- Maintains rapport and cooperative relationships; addresses conflict constructively; contributes to problem identification and resolution.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information per HIPAA; discusses information only with appropriate personnel in private places.
- Assumes responsibility for safe performance of duties; reports hazards and unsafe practices immediately.
- Provides quality patient care considering age, development, and cultural needs; demonstrates unit/area competencies.
- Assists with inter-hospital patient transports for patients on devices documented for competency.
- Performs nocturnal pulse oximetry studies as ordered.
- Continues to gain knowledge and competency as position/experience deem appropriate.
Required Education, Experience And Certification/Licensure
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of either
1) first year of accredited RT program in good standing or
2) paramedic or EMT program. - Experience:
6 months of RT experience preferred. - Certification/Licensure: BCLS

Skills And Abilities
Interpersonal skills to communicate with patients and personnel when explaining treatment procedures and with physicians and other departmental personnel when gathering and exchanging patient-related information. Analytical skills to observe and evaluate patients during treatments and to notify appropriate personnel in case of distress or status changes. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when reading orders, monitoring equipment, and recording data in patient charts.
FLEX only: Schedule requirements include a minimum of two 12-hour shifts per schedule period with at least one shift on a weekend; eight-hour shifts may be allowed only in specific situations described in the original posting (minimum two 12-hour shifts, last-minute coverage, or three 8-hour afternoon shifts). Submit availability for at least one holiday 12-hour shift per year. Shifts are assigned as needed;
failure to submit availability for two consecutive periods may result in termination at management’s discretion.

At or before the associates one-year anniversary, graduation from an accredited Respiratory Care program and registry eligibility may be considered to move into the Respiratory Therapist New Graduate flex position and sign the contingent position agreement at that time.
