Overview

DESCRIPTION

An Animal Care Technician works one-on-one with animals to monitor and maintain the health of animals under their care and performs duties such as receiving new animals, cleaning and changing cages and providing food and water. Other duties may include updating and maintaining animal records, administering injections and medications, sterilizing equipment, preparing laboratory samples (Rabies testing), assisting with medical care of animals and interacting with and educating the public on topics such as pet overpopulation, feline population management, etc.

Responsibilities
  • Provides food and water for domestic, wild, and exotic animals at shelter
  • Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures and feed bowls
  • Euthanizes animals as needed
  • Observes animals for signs of illness or injury and reports findings to Veterinary Center
  • Maintains facility
  • Assists with the Adoptions Department for socials and health checks
  • Scanning, vaccinating and deworming of animals that the shelter receives
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) equivalent
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Animal species and breeds
  • Aging of dogs and cats
  • Ability to properly identify genders of dogs and cats
  • Proper methods of safely handing and restraining a wide variety of animals
  • Animal nutritional needs
  • Symptoms of common diseases of dogs and cats
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds as demonstrated by a challenge test
  • Extensive direct handling, carrying, and restraining of animals, both large and small
  • Carrying of supplies and equipment
  • Extensive walking, standing stooping, bending and carrying
  • Occasional running to apprehend loose animals evading capture
  • Communicate effectively with general public, staff and city contacts in person and by telephone
  • Read and write handwritten and typewritten documents/records
  • Able to tolerate loud animal noises and objectionable odors
Schedule
  • Overtime as needed
  • Days, including weekends and holidays
Environmental Conditions

Work outside in various types of weather. Must be able to work in or around animal fur, dander, excrement, deal with and protect against infectious and aggressive animals. Incumbents may encounter customers who are emotionally distressed and confrontational.

Supplemental Information

Only those candidates whose applications and resumes most clearly demonstrate the job-related experience, education, and training sought by Inland Valley Humane Society shall be selected to move forward in the recruitment process. Placement in the position shall be contingent upon the successful completion of a written test with a minimum score of 80%, a reference check, prior employment check, Live Scan, and pre-employment medical exam including a drug test.
