Job SummaryPeer tutors facilitate learning among class peers by helping to clarify specific course content and promote the use of appropriate study strategies. Tutors may consult with faculty for course resources, guidance, and direction in their tutoring work. Tutors host regularly scheduled weekly drop-in sessions outside of class or clinic hours.
Peer tutors do not provide answers to homework assignments but rather work with students to model problem solving strategies and explain course-specific concepts in compliance with university academic integrity standards.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively in English. Language ability to compose clear and concise reports.
- The ability to effectively, professionally and tactfully interact and communicate with students, faculty, administrators and staff members as necessary.
- The ability to manage projects and assignments in an efficient and effective manner.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office, the internet and email and the ability to learn other technology necessary for the position.
- The ability to effectively gather information from a variety of sources, compile and analyze information.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Education:
Student enrolled in the College of Optometry in good academic standing. - Student must meet Federal Work Study (FWS) qualifications, which are:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have a completed current FAFSA.
- Must have remaining financial aid unmet need.
- Must be in good academic standing at Western University of Health Sciences.
Experience:
Volunteerism and strong study skills preferred.
- Assists students with specific course‑related concepts and problems during drop‑in tutoring sessions.
- Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with supervisor.
- Consults with faculty for course resources, guidance, and direction.
- Assists with other program projects as assigned. The University/College has the right to add/change duties at any time.
