About The Rock Pool Project

The Rock Pool Project is a UK-wide environmental charity that connects people with marine nature through citizen science, community engagement, and education. We work with families, volunteers, and communities across the UK to explore intertidal rocky shore habitats, contribute to biodiversity monitoring, and build long-term care for the marine environment.

A core part of our work is the Big Rock Pool Challenge
, a national programme that brings communities together through local hubs and participation campaigns such as the National Bio Blitz
, while generating valuable biodiversity data and skills development opportunities.

About the role

We are looking for a Communications Officer to take ownership of the delivery of The Rock Pool Project’s digital communications strategy
.

This role is responsible for ensuring that our digital communications, including monthly email newsletters, social media, and campaign messaging, are delivered consistently, strategically, and to a high standard. The Communications Officer will play a central role in how we communicate impact, celebrate volunteer discoveries, engage local communities, and demonstrate national reach to partners and funders, including the Scottish Power Foundation.

Working closely with delivery staff and volunteers, you will turn activity from across the UK into compelling, media-ready digital content that supports participation, showcases impact, and strengthens the organisation’s profile.

Responsibilities

Delivery of the digital communications strategy (core responsibility)

  • Lead the delivery of The Rock Pool Project’s digital communications strategy, ensuring consistent messaging across email, social media, and campaign communications.
  • Plan, manage, and prioritise digital communications activity in line with organisational objectives and delivery timelines.
  • Ensure digital communications support participation, inclusion, partner visibility, and impact reporting.

Monthly email newsletters

  • Plan, draft, and deliver The Rock Pool Project’s monthly email newsletters in line with the Big Rock Pool Challenge communications strategy.
  • Produce local hub–focused and national versions, combining storytelling, impact data, and clear calls to action.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to gather photos, quotes, and stories and shape these into engaging, accessible digital content.
  • Ensure newsletters are media-ready, impact-focused, and clearly acknowledge funders and partners, including the Scottish Power Foundation.
  • Lead on day-to-day social media activity across Instagram, Facebook, and Linked In.
  • Adapt newsletter and campaign content into platform-appropriate social media posts.
  • Support visibility of local hubs by sharing stories and discoveries while maintaining a strong national narrative.
  • Engage partners, sponsors, and stakeholders appropriately through digital channels.

Campaign communications

  • Deliver digital communications for national campaigns such as the National Bio Blitz
    , including pre-campaign promotion, live updates, and post-campaign storytelling.
  • Work with colleagues to align messaging across digital channels.
  • Ensure campaign communications are timely, accurate, and engaging.

Collaboration & workflow

  • Work closely with the Community & Engagement Manager to source stories and content from hubs and volunteers.
  • Coordinate internal review and sign-off processes for digital communications.
  • Maintain organised records of digital communications outputs, assets, and content libraries.

Monitoring & reporting

  • Contribute digital communications outputs to reporting and evaluation for the Scottish Power Foundation–funded programme.
  • Identify trends, themes, and opportunities to strengthen future digital communications.
