Highley Specialised Respiratory Physiologist

We are looking for a motivated clinical scientist to provide highly specialist respiratory and sleep diagnostics within our Department of Thoracic Medicine. The post holder will also be instrumental in supporting the management of patients with sleep disordered breathing.

*** Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

Providing and interpreting specialist and highly specialist sleep and respiratory physiological tests.

Providing treatment for and managing patients with sleep disordered breathing.

Line management of band 6 staff.

Supporting the lead physiologist with regards service provision and development.

Job responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Work autonomously to manage own patient caseload, this includes undertaking non-medical clinics, domiciliary visits and outreaching into other hospitals.

2. Working unsupervised in providing complete lung function service, being required to make decisions within authorisation levels, adhering to Trust Policy and Procedures.

3. Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) based on interpretation of national and professional guidelines and evidence-based practice.

4. Clinically prioritise referrals. Plan and prioritise own workload, based on factors such as clinical need, co-ordinating clinical activities with other professionals, as necessary.

5. Assess referral forms for suitability and contra-indications, liaise with clinicians on appropriate tests for patient and use own judgement with regard to patient capability and health.

6. Using specialist machines perform a range of highly complex lung function tests including cardio-pulmonary exercise tests.

7. Interpret test results and make informed decision to administer broncho-dilator drug in accordance with protocols.

8. Undertake a range of sleep studies, oximetry, capnography and polysomnography.

9. Review results, identify and perform any other relevant tests or discuss further tests with clinician.

10. Independently assesses sleep patients including those referred directly from other professionals including GPs, orders, undertakes testing before establishing CPAP treatment if required.
