Overview

The EHS Engineer plays an integral part in ensuring that BD Plymouth complies with all relevant Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability legislation as it effects the business, and supports the achievement of functional business targets and goals. This includes, but is not limited to, managing the site’s Environmental Management System, legal and regulatory compliance, adherence to corporate standards, training and awareness, auditing, incident investigation, utilities consumption monitoring and reporting, and waste management.

About The Role

The EHS Engineer will build effective relationships across the Plymouth site and promote a positive culture by ensuring that all plant associates work within a healthy, safe, sustainable, and compliant environment. The EHS Engineer will report to the site EHS Lead for the BD Plymouth site and will work closely with the Corporate EHS and Sustainability teams to forge strong relationships and positively represent the plant.

Main

Responsibilities Will Include
  • To assist all levels of management in implementing and maintaining the standards required of the health and safety at work act, all other codes of practice and relevant standards.
  • Establish appropriate processes and controls to ensure that the site maintains ISO
    14001 certification including leading Environmental Management reviews.
  • Act as the key contact and facilitator for external visits and audits from relevant agencies, e.g., HSE, Environmental Consultants, the Environment Agency, and Plymouth City Council.
  • Report internally (plant & Corporate) and externally as appropriate the site’s environmental impact including utilities, energy, water, and waste management.
  • Act as the key contact and provider of information in support of any Employers Liability or Public Liability claims.
  • Carry out risk assessments on assembly equipment (new and old) ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of associates is not compromised.
  • Participate in Business Team meetings; provide functional data, support and advice.
  • Create COSHH risk assessments and maintain the site COSHH Risk Assessment database.
  • Action the findings of COSHH Risk Assessments and work with departmental leads to ensure suitable and sufficient control measures are implemented and maintained.
  • Conduct internal and external EHS audits in conjunction with departmental representatives and track remedial work to completion. Conduct environmental audits to ISO
    14001 requirements.
  • Utilise data to analyse Near Misses and incidents and identify areas of concern.
  • Identify the need for and carry out Health and Safety training with all associates, both at recruitment and in-line with ongoing job function requirements.
  • Write and maintain safety procedures with regards to manufacturing equipment, chemical handling, workplace transport, manual handling and contractor management.
  • Assist with accident, incident and near miss investigations, offering advice and best practice solutions where appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all functional legislation.
  • Report unsafe occurrences and incidents to the HSE, EA, BDX and other notifiable bodies as and when required.
  • Assist with the introduction of new machinery, processes, and equipment by confirming all hazards are identified and mitigated and ensuring the continued safety of associates.
  • Attend Blitz activities, waste events, and safety committees as a representative of the EHS department, offering advice where appropriate and clarifying legislative requirements.
  • Review and approve the relevant sections of Change Control documentation.
  • Individuals have the authority to execute all responsibilities detailed within their job description and any procedures or processes in C2C or otherwise.
About You
  • Achieved a BSc or BEng in a Health & Safety discipline.
  • Obtained a NEBOSH, IOSH or NVQ H&S qualification or equivalent experience is essential.
  • Health, safety and environmental experience within a diverse high volume manufacturing organisation.
  • Detailed understanding of legal compliance and proven experience as a trained Auditor.
