Surgeon, Medical Doctor
Job Summary
The post is to support the service with rising workload within the service line (currently 365 PA's over job plans and likely to grow with increased general surgery and bariatric workload) and succession planning. The post-holder will work within the Service Line alongside the six existing Upper GI (UGI) surgery Surgeons and will have expertise in bariatric surgery, benign UGI surgery, oesophago-gastric cancer surgery and emergency general surgery.
Mainduties and working pattern
The unit uses an annualised job plan with direct clinical care commitments in theatre, endoscopy and clinics allocated on a rolling basis by mutual agreement. The plan includes a fixed commitment to attend MDT meetings. Other commitments are flexible to fulfil the individual job plan. Access to theatres, clinics and endoscopy to fulfil agreed job plans is guaranteed. The post is advertised for a 10 PA contract;
individuals may negotiate for additional sessions after appointment. A job planning review will take place 6–12 months after appointment to assess whether further SPAs are required. The Trust supports annual appraisal and revalidation, and invites new consultant colleagues to join the mentoring scheme or to continue with agreed arrangements. The UGI unit has clinical sessions every weekday: 5 all-day theatre lists, 3–4 outpatient clinics, 3 endoscopy lists, plus on-call emergency general surgery and oesophago-gastric surgery cover.
These sessions rotate for the new appointee.
The surgeons in Plymouth provide a 1:7 on-call rota to cover OG patients (may occur with general surgery on-call). The post-holder would participate in this rota. Bariatric surgery has been performed in Plymouth since the 1990s; UHP was re-commissioned to provide bariatric surgery in 2010 as one of five providers within the Southwest. UHP currently performs laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery, with a target of 100 procedures per year.
Three surgeons currently perform bariatric surgery and work with a dedicated Weight Management Programme. The post-holder will consolidate and develop bariatric surgery in Plymouth with the existing team. UHP offers a full range of benign UGI surgery (e.g., laparoscopic cholecystectomy including bile duct exploration, anti-reflux procedures including complex revisional work, hiatal hernia procedures, and surgery for achalasia). General surgery workload (groin and abdominal wall hernias) will also be shared.
