Job Summary

The successful applicant will work as part of an enthusiastic team and the position provides good exposure to acute and general neurology and stroke medicine. The Neurology department takes acute admissions 365 days of the year. Most acute neurological problems including all acute stroke patients are admitted directly under the care of the Neurologists.

Main Duties

The appointed doctor will have the opportunity to attend and be educationally involved in a minimum of 3 Consultant and 1 Specialist Registrar ward rounds per week. He/she will take an equal share in the management of patients within the Neurology Department and be actively involved in both acute take and elective admissions taking responsibility in turn for acute neurology admissions and GP calls, and elective admissions to the department.

The post‐holder will also have the opportunity to be part of the stroke team that is involved in acute stroke treatment such as thrombolysis and caring for patients in the acute stroke unit. It is envisaged that each of the teams will work together to assist each other with ward duties.

Job Responsibilities

Qualifications
  • Essential Qualifications
    • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
    • At least 12 months working experience after full GMC registration with a licence to practise
    • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Desirable Qualifications
    • Experience working in the NHS or completion of a NHS clinical attachment
  • Essential Clinical Skills – Knowledge & Experience
    • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems; previous experience in Neurology/Stroke
  • Desirable Clinical Skills
    • Previous working experience in neurology or stroke medicine
    • MRCP Part 1 or full MRCP
  • Academic / Research Skills
    • Understanding of research, including ethical issues
    • Understanding of basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence‑based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives
    • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence‑informed practice
  • Desirable Academic / Research Skills
    • Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements (e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations)
    • Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity focusing on patient safety and clinical improvement
