Summary:
The Emergency Department Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) functions as an active member of the interdisciplinary team that provides health care services to patients seeking care in the Emergency Department. The APP works both independently and collaboratively with the Emergency Department physician to provide comprehensive health care services to patients, including assessment, diagnosis, prescription, treatment and follow-up planning.
Essential Job Functions*:
Performs physical exams and assessments of patients in the Emergency Department, including urgent, non-urgent, and emergent presentations
Selects orders and performs laboratory and other diagnostic testing to augment physical findings
Interprets data and diagnostic results for appropriate course of action
Formulates differential diagnosis based on history, physical and clinical findings, and diagnostic testing
Documents current injury, physical findings, diagnosis, and plan of care in the medical record
Orders prescriptions as allowed by APP licensure without physician co-signature
Consults with the Emergency Department physician, the patient?s PCP, or appropriate on call consultants when needed to plan appropriate follow-up or admission
Consults with Emergency Department physician when unsure about any aspect of patient care or when necessary to plan appropriate follow-up or admission
Arranges referrals and consultations with non-medical health care providers and arranges for medical consultations
Formulates, in collaboration with the patient, primary nurse and others a plan that includes discharge and follow-up care
Evaluates patient physiological and behavioral responses to interventions for revision of management plan and documents changes in the medical record
Communicates with patient and their family members regarding plan of care
Identifies educational needs of patients/families and assists with teaching
Ensures confidentiality of patient information
Performs procedures granted through the credentialing process
Qualifications:
Education
Required:
Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or AMA approved Physician Assistant Program
Preferred:
Emergency Medicine/Family Practice Focus
Work Experience
Required:
1 year experience in Urgent Care, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine
Preferred:
Experience working independently in either of these settings
Licensure/Certification s/Registrations
Required:
- Licensed by NH Board of Nursing or Board of Medicine as Physician
Assistant
- Must possess valid narcotics registration (DEA certificate)
- Current BCLS
- ACLS and PALS certification; to be completed within one
year of hire
Preferred:
Other Skills/Knowledge
Required:
- Ability to deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to the
patient?s age, physical ability and intellectual development. Must
demonstrate proficiency in assessing treatment and responses and
adapting care to meet the needs of the Emergency Department
population
- Ability to communicate ideas by means of the spoken word, medical
orders, and patient written instructions
- Ability to efficiently utilize EMR
