Overview
A prime mechanical contractor is hiring a hands-on Controller to own the day-to-day financial operations of a fast-growing, industrial construction business with more than 600 employees across the U.S. This role leads the Michigan accounting function, oversees payroll for hundreds of field employees, and manages compliance and reporting. You’ll partner closely with the Vice President and CFO to keep the business financially tight, accurate, and scalable.
You will run the books, lead a small team, improve processes, and provide leadership with the data they need to make smart decisions. They are looking for a grounded, construction-savvy accounting leader who thrives in an onsite, team-based environment and wants to be the financial backbone of a stable, growing contractor.
- Oversee general accounting activities and ensure accuracy and compliance
- Manage payroll oversight for 500–700 employees
- Supervise and develop two direct reports
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports
- Coordinate tax compliance with external accounting partners
- Maintain internal controls and financial policies
- Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Monitor cash flow, expenses, and employee reimbursements
- Support construction operations with job cost and project reporting
- Drive accounting process improvements and efficiency
- Support year-end close and audit preparation
- Provide financial insights into leadership for business decisions
- 5+ years of accounting experience
- 2+ years of leadership or people-management experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- Construction or contractor-side accounting experience
- Experience overseeing payroll and general ledger functions
- Strong working knowledge of financial reporting and compliance
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and accounting systems
- Union payroll experience preferred
- CPA preferred
- Experience with Foundation Accounting Software preferred
