Lower School Teacher —

Ivywood Classical Academy is a tuition-free public school that educates students using the virtues-based and rigorous classical education tradition. The classical curriculum emphasizes the humanities, sciences, and arts, and integrates Spanish and Latin to promote depth in learning. Ivywood strives to develop students with high moral character who understand the world and their role in society. We value understanding the why behind lessons, which fosters a love for learning.

Ivywood Classical Academy is a Hillsdale College Barney Charter School Initiative (BCSI) Member School.

Responsibilities
  • Curriculum & Instruction: Accepts responsibility for the achievement of students; guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and personal learning plans; demonstrates effective planning and organization; selects and adapts materials to learning styles and abilities; demonstrates creativity and adaptability to maintain order and learning; motivates students and maintains high expectations; uses resources effectively to support learning inside and outside the classroom;

    demonstrates exceptional classroom techniques, including questioning to build independent learners, clear directions, mutual respect, independent thought and expression, and engaging experiences in large and small groups.
  • Classroom Management: Works cooperatively with guardians and earns guardians’ confidence; demonstrates genuine concern for students in a climate of high expectations; promotes responsible citizenship; maintains a classroom atmosphere based on firm, fair, and consistent practices and responsible citizenship.
  • Student Enrollment & Retention: Shares responsibility for the academy’s reputation in the community.
  • Professional Development & Leadership: Participates in policy development affecting instruction; uses technology effectively for instruction, record-keeping, communication, and administrative tasks; pursues personal growth and contributes to a collaborative learning community; conducts oneself ethically; continually improves teaching methods and interpersonal relationships; displays qualities that reflect positively on the individual and the academy; takes pride in being a teacher and a member of the academy;

    assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the school leader.
  • Facilities: Maintains orderly, safe learning environments and appropriate use of facilities and equipment; keeps the classroom clean and safe with student involvement.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with endorsements in appropriate grade and subject levels, meeting state requirements. If not certificated, alternative pathway with a Bachelor's degree plus MTTC endorsements may apply.
  • Ability to use technology as an instructional tool, for data analysis, and for communications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written expression using standard grammar and vocabulary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Recent teaching experience or coursework in primary instruction.
  • Knowledge of current instructional strategies for the specified grade level.
  • Desire and ability to work with diverse students toward educational goals.
