Swim Instructor/Aide – Adaptive Swim Lessons
Wage: $9–$15/hour
Status: Part-time / non-benefited / non-exempt
GENERAL PURPOSEThe Adaptive Swim Instructor/Aide serves at the pleasure of the Assistant Aquatics Manager, Aquatics Coordinator, and Aquatics Manager. This position is responsible for providing safe, supportive, and engaging swim instruction for participants with disabilities in Pleasant Grove's adaptive swim lesson programs. The Adaptive Swim Instructor/Aide ensures the safety of all participants, enforces pool policies and water safety rules, and serves as a positive role model both on and off duty.
This is a part-time, seasonal position (mid-April to September). Weekly hours may vary based on program needs and departmental scheduling and will not exceed 20 hours.
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide swim instruction to participants with disabilities using adaptive teaching techniques and individualized support as needed.
- Evaluates students progress. Completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Interacts with parents/guardians on the activities and development of students swim skills. Acts as a PGVMP "ambassador" to ensure parental satisfaction.
- Supervise and oversee water activities, enforcing rules and policies to ensure participant safety at all times.
- Modify instruction, equipment, and activities to meet the physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional needs of participants.
- Assist with preparation and support for adaptive programs, special activities, and events.
- Support rescue procedures as directed and fulfill assigned roles outlined in the Emergency Action Plan.
- Assist with basic cleanup and overall facility appearance as needed.
- Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and staff in a respectful and supportive manner.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
. - Must be currently SAI Swim Instructor Certified
, or willing to attend and successfully complete a PGVMP certification course. - Must be willing to work with individuals with disabilities and follow adaptive program guidelines.
- Ability to make sound decisions in a potentially stressful aquatics environment.
- Ability to work compassionately and patiently with individuals of varying abilities.
- Moderate physical activity required, including standing and/or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to lift between 15–50 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodation).
- Ability to follow written and spoken instructions.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong public relations and customer service skills in sometimes stressful situations.
- Work environment may involve exposure to hazards or physical risks requiring adherence to safety procedures.
- Current WSI certification preferred.
- Prior experience working with individuals with disabilities is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.
This position serves the public through adaptive aquatic programming at the swimming pool. Employees may be required to work in adverse weather conditions, lift and manage equipment and supplies, and stand for extended periods during shifts. Hours may include weekends and some holidays and may vary based on seasonal programming needs, with a maximum of 20 hours per week. The position may involve occasional strenuous physical activity, both indoors and outdoors, to support adaptive programming and special events.
