Position: Streets / Storm Water Operator

General Purpose

Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City storm water drainage systems, streets, rights-of-way, all property and equipment of the City. This position works with the Public Works Storm Water Supervisor to ensure quality work is performed and completed through which work is reviewed and results measured by the Public Works Storm Water Supervisor.

Functions

and Duties
  • Maintains public facilities and grounds.
  • Cuts and clears weeds; clears brush from right-of-ways.
  • Operates tractor, riding-mower, small truck and common hand and power tools.
  • Loads/unloads heavy material from trucks; digs, levels and spreads fill, rock and sand.
  • Moves equipment and large bulky objects.
  • Patches holes in road with asphalt or rock. Breaks and replaces pavement.
  • Installs/replaces street signs. Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Transports small equipment/tools between departments.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and small tools for proper operating condition.
  • Inspect and enforce Pleasant Grove City SWPPP for public and private owned facilities.
  • Keeps records of work completed. Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance.
  • Communicate with co-workers, citizens, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
Minimum Qualifications Education
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid drivers' license required.
  • CDL must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
Experience
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in Public Works.
  • Equipment operating experience on light and heavy equipment desired.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment of public works field operations such as repair of streets, mechanical maintenance, automotive fleet, and safety practices.
  • The hazards of work in public rights-of-way and safety precautions.
  • Mathematical principles as required by a general high school curriculum.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather at all hours of the day for a prolonged period of time.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make moderate independent decisions.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, maps, and digital information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public as well as with fellow employees.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Complete and maintain accurate written reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects with assistance.
  • Ability to perform work with recurring movement, including lifting, standing, bending, walking, crawling, or climbing.
Working Conditions
  • Working conditions may vary.
  • Regularly works in hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually outdoors and loud.
