The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Route Driver I, Route Driver II or Senior Route Driver classification. Salary ranges:
Route Driver I $21.77 - $26.13 per hour;
Route Driver II $22.86 - $27.44 per hour;
Senior Route Driver $24.01 – $28.81 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Operates refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transports loads to various refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
  • Operates various heavy specialized equipment.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles and equipment for safety checks and ensures proper performance and operation.
  • Performs routine maintenance for assigned vehicle and equipment; reports any repair needs to supervisor.
  • May assist in inspecting incoming loads of yard debris and recycling for contamination.
  • Responds to routine customer inquiries; refers complaints or problems to supervisor as needed.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in collection, safety requirements and standards, appropriate safety equipment and procedures, applicable ordinances, regulations and policies regarding the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and City of Plano streets and address locations.
  • Skill in communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety policies, procedures, and regulations; completing basic mathematical calculations.
  • Education High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment and vehicles. (For Route Driver II:
    Two (2) years; for Senior:
    Four (4) years.)
  • Licenses and Certifications Texas Class “B” Commercial driver’s license (prior to employment); may require Tanker endorsement for Route Driver II and Senior.
  • Conditions of Employment Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access to Police buildings), and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Must possess mobility to work in and around City composting, recycling, and refuse facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on unimproved/improved surfaces or streets; strength, stamina and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; vision to read printed materials; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Physical tasks include lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling materials up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings, streets, and facilities and are exposed to loud noise, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, dust, toxic waste, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous substances and fumes.
