Job Responsibilities
  • Ensures the personal safety of the facility users by enforcing all rules and regulations.
  • Regulates and monitors water chemistry in the pool.
  • Conducts weekly in-service training; evaluates and gives instruction to lifeguards to improve techniques; performs CPR audits.
  • Supervises and gives direction to the lifeguarding staff to accomplish daily goals and objectives.

Our Head Lifeguards are critical to the success of our aquatic operations. They help create an environment where family and friends feel safe, where they feel welcome, and where they feel they belong. Head Lifeguards must have the ability to adapt on the fly, address patron concerns, provide leadership to a group of Lifeguards and Recreation Aides, and at the same time provide an exciting fun experience for our guests.

Qualities we are looking for include passion, professionalism, excitement and positive energy. Key components also include maintaining safety at all times and effective surveillance.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Head Lifeguard II supervises operations, programs, and maintenance of an aquatic facility in the absence of the facility supervisor or pool manager.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Head Lifeguard series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

Examples Of Essential Job Functions
  • Ensures the personal safety of the facility users by enforcing all rules and regulations.
  • Performs maintenance work to pool, spectator areas and rest rooms.
  • Regulates and monitors water chemistry in the pool.
  • Collects fees; prepares of bank deposits and departmental records and reports.
  • Conducts weekly in-service training; evaluates and gives instruction to lifeguards to improve techniques; performs CPR audits.
  • Promotes public relations with facility users and outside organizations by presenting water safety seminars to requesting groups.
  • Supervises and gives direction to the lifeguarding staff to accomplish daily goals and objectives.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Marginal Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of: Plano Parks & Recreation Department and the aquatics area; aquatics activities; lifeguard and rescue techniques and practices; CPR and first aid; water safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; demonstrating strong swimming abilities; performing CPR; administering first aid; completing water rescue procedures.
  • Education: Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Experience: Three (3) summers experience as a lifeguard. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

    Certifications:

    Certified Pool Operator. Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification. Lifeguard Training Instructor. American Red Cross issued Waterpark Lifeguard certification.
  • Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
