Job Details

The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Public Works Maintenance Worker II or Public Works Maintenance Worker III classification. The II classification pays $19.75 – $23.70 per hour; the III classification pays $20.74 – $23.70 per hour.

Entry‑level role offers hands‑on experience in the field with full training. Typical daily activities include flushing dead‑end water mains, operating fire hydrants, checking chlorine levels, resolving residential and commercial sewer stoppages, routine sewer cleaning and CCTV inspections, and participating in water and sewer system repairs.

Hours are 6:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday. Valid CDL holders may receive a better offer. After a six‑month probationary period employees must participate in an on‑call rotation. Overtime opportunities are available for trained employees willing to work outside regular hours.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II – Essential Job Functions
  • Assists preparing work areas and secures job sites by setting up traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, and advance warning signs
  • Prepares tools, materials, and equipment necessary for daily tasks; cleans, inspects, and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks
  • Complies with all written city policies and procedures
  • Understands how to use basic personal protective equipment
  • Drives to and from work locations as assigned
  • Inspects job sites and complies with safety procedures
  • Trained and able to work in confined spaces
  • Follows the guidance of a crew leader to set up proper trench shoring
  • Uses tools and handles materials associated with the installation of new water mains, sewer mains, service connections, and manholes
  • Operates dead‑end blow‑off valves or flushing to maintain water quality
  • Able to assist with locating water main and service line leaks
  • Serves on call
  • Safely lifts, moves, and positions equipment for jet truck operations
  • Trained to locate assets in CMMS (Cartegraph)
  • Responds to citizen concerns and complaints
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Typical Decisions – Public Works Maintenance Worker II

The incumbent is responsible for inspecting assigned equipment, identifying potential safety hazards, and the use of safe work methods and safety equipment.

Minimum Qualifications – Public Works Maintenance Worker II
  • Knowledge:
    Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement
  • Skill:
    Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment; performing routine construction and repair work; completing basic mathematical calculations and measurements
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience:

    One (1) year of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Conditions of Employment:
    Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into police buildings), and social security number verification check
