The City of Plano’s Public Works Department is looking for skilled and dependable Public Works Crew Leaders to join our Utility Operations team. These positions play a hands‑on leadership role in maintaining and repairing the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems that serve our businesses and nearly 300,000 residents. Working under the direction of supervisors, these positions provide daily guidance to field staff, ensure safe work‑site practices, and operate a variety of equipment to complete essential maintenance and repair work.
Enjoy flexibility with your schedule! Choose between a four‑day, 10‑hour workweek (6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) or a traditional five‑day, 8‑hour schedule (6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.).

Under supervision, the Public Works Crew Leader leads the work activities of assigned staff. Engages in the operations, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary sewer lines and systems.
Essential Job Functions- Leads the work activities of assigned maintenance staff engaged in maintaining the City’s infrastructure.
- Maintains, and completes daily work orders through asset management and work order software.
- Provides communication and job information to customers and Supervisors.
- Ensures work sites are safe and appropriately secured in accordance with Public Works Standard Operating Procedures.
- Ensures own and subordinates’ proper use of personal protective equipment and following all job site safety requirements.
- Operates a backhoe, tandem dump truck, loader, air hammer, chain saw, mortar mixer, pump or other related tools and equipment.
- Inspects vehicles, equipment and tools to ensure they are safe, clean, maintained, fueled and ready for use at all times.
- Addresses and resolves citizen complaints in a respectful and courteous manner through clear communication and accurate information sharing.
- Participates in training subordinate personnel, including Equipment Operators and Maintenance Workers.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The incumbent must determine the materials required for a project, assignments for on‑site field staff, and most appropriate methods for completing the project/job assigned.
Minimum QualificationsKnowledge of: Safety practices and procedures, operation, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary sewer systems, tools, equipment, and materials used in Public Works, traffic control, excavation safety.
Skill in: Communicating clearly, reading and interpreting water meters, performing leak assessments, providing guidance and leadership to assigned staff, operating and controlling equipment, addressing and resolving customer complaints, performing basic mathematics, reading and interpreting maps and charts.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary sewer systems. Lead experience is preferred.

Texas Class B Commercial driver’s license prior to employment, Class A preferred.
