The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Traffic Signal Technician I or II classification. The range for the Traffic Signal Technician I is $27.79 - $34.74 per hour; for the Traffic Signal Technician II is $29.18 - $36.48

Join the City of Plano and be part of a team that keeps our city moving! We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Signal Department as a Traffic Signal Technician II. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our traffic signals across the city. You'll work hands-on maintaining signal cabinets and signal lights, learning specialized skills that keep Plano's roadways running smoothly.

A successful candidate will have:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • One (1) or Three (3) years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic signal and traffic control equipment.
  • Class C Drivers license.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II preffered
  • Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing;
    Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement.

This position offers a flexible work schedule, with the option to work either Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Will be on call for a week once every 5th week.

Traffic Signal Technician I (The job description for the Traffic Signal Technician II is below.)

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level classification in the Traffic Signal Technician series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision with work frequently reviewed by a superior. This classification is distinguished from the Traffic Signal Technician II in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Inspects traffic signal equipment to ensure that signalized intersections are operating as programmed.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains the traffic signal equipment.
  • May coordinate and direct traffic signal personnel in the technical applications of signal construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Assists in the construction of traffic signal equipment.
  • Maintains daily work records.
  • May be required to operate equipment, such as aerial man lift or backhoe/trencher, as required.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Marginal Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions : The incumbent inspects and troubleshoots traffic signal equipment to identify and correct malfunctioning equipment.
