Short Description/Intro
Whitley Penn, a leading CPA and consulting firm, is looking for a Virtual Services Engineer to join our team. This position is an integral member of the IT team and provides firm‑wide support of the underlying IT infrastructure (servers, network gear, cloud applications, etc.). The Virtual Services Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, documentation, and troubleshooting of firewalls and virtual desktops primarily.
A successful candidate will be an experienced self‑starter who is looking to join a fast‑moving IT team that values integrity and reliability and seeks to mature and improve technology operations.

Hours:
Fully in‑office position; general work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8 hours/day between 8am to 5pm with overtime, as needed.

- Perform daily tasks to ensure the stability and optimization of the virtual server environment, which includes proactively identifying potential system issues, working with team members in deciding a resolution, and implementing the agreed‑upon resolutions.
- Conduct maintenance of the operating systems on all servers, end user support, monitoring system usage and performance, patching, file‑system management, server installation/configuration, and third‑party or in‑house application support including installations and configuration changes.
- Perform regular maintenance and configuration tasks for firewalls.
- Coordinate, test, and implement enhancements or new releases of operating systems and business software applications in virtual server and virtual desktop environments.
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate system utilization to ensure the appropriate and efficient use of applications and system resources across virtual servers and desktops.
- Prepare documentation for proper use of systems, operating procedures for assigned systems and hardware, and procedures for managing and maintaining assigned systems and infrastructure.
- Serve as 3rd level support for relevant and properly escalated support requests.
- Follow change control processes and documentation requirements.
- Other relevant job duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in managing and maintaining a sophisticated IT infrastructure involving multiple physical locations, LANs, VLANs, servers, and a wide variety of applications.
- Working understanding of information, communication, and security technologies, standards, policies and practices (e.g., Active Directory, GPO, LDAP, VLAN, DNS, DHCP, VPN and Teams).
- Be familiar with concepts, practices, and procedures with hands‑on experience on following platforms:
Azure, 365, Nutanix, Hyper
V, and Windows Server. - Excellent working knowledge of networks and firewalls.
- Forti Gate and Cisco experience a plus.
- Attention to detail, strong analytics, interpersonal, time management, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
- Strong professional presence: ability to handle multiple requests simultaneously while maintaining tact and diplomacy.
- Initiative to manage job related continuing education and keep abreast of current trends in the technology arena.
