Summary
The Surgical Technician prepares supplies, equipment and instrumentation for each surgery performed in the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The Surgical Technician will assist the physician with the maintenance of the sterile field and all supplies for each surgery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Open surgical supplies, set up sterile field and maintain it using aseptic technique. Identify any break in sterile technique.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and request appropriate supplies prior to their immediate need.
- Update surgeon preference cards as needed.
- Report missing or malfunctioning equipment and instruments to the OR Manager in a timely manner.
- Operate equipment required to perform job in a safe and efficient manner.
- Perform sharp and sponge counts with the RN or Circulator according to policy.
- Dispose of sharps and hazardous materials according to policy and utilize PPE.
- Wash and reprocess instrumentation according to established standards and ASC policy.
- Organize storage area for instruments and supplies under the direction of the OR Manager.
- Label medication on the sterile field, account for and verify amounts, reporting totals to both the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
- Maintain knowledge of commonly used local anesthetics, antibiotics, and topical hemostats.
- Assist OR staff as directed with physician orders according to patient needs.
- Assist in initial operating room (OR) setup, including wiping down all flat surfaces and assisting in initial decontamination room setup.
- Clean OR with appropriate disinfecting agents.
- Assist Nurse Manager in the maintenance of supply inventory.
- Assist in end‑of‑day clean‑up procedures.
- Participate in staff meetings and in‑services, accurately maintaining education file.
- Position is in office; remote work is not available.
- Other duties as assigned.
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program and one year of experience as a Surgical Technician preferred. Ophthalmology experience strongly preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsCurrent BCLS certification required or must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment. Surgical Technician certification is strongly preferred.
