Required Experience: more than 3–5 years as Cardiac Sonographer
Call Requirement: 5:30pm–7:00am weekends; 5:30pm–6:30am weekdays
The Cardiac Sonographer II performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients, including transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echocardiography, to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. Duties include preparing equipment, prepping patients and explaining procedures, reviewing images, reporting findings, and analyzing patient clinical history to identify the purpose of the examination and framing the clinical question the examination is intended to answer.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS OF
THE ROLE
- Prepare patients for procedures and obtain clinical history, including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data, to adapt imaging techniques for comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiograms.
- Perform basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures using various equipment and techniques; make measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results.
- Identify and define cardiac abnormalities; extend the scope of the examination as appropriate and correlate invasive and noninvasive test results with cardiac anatomy and function.
- Assist physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing echocardiography studies to support complex procedures and reduce risk factors.
- Assist in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist; calculate appropriate measurements and sterilize probes.
- Record statistics and perform daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment; report malfunctions as appropriate.
- Serve as a resource to staff, physicians and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures and studies to optimize patient care.
- Work closely with the cardiac sonographer quality coordinator to ensure adherence to quality processes and protocols, and assist with ICAEL accreditation activities as delegated.
- Implement protocols as new technology evolves and ensure adherence to system echocardiography standards.
- Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation and techniques.
- Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
- Ability to explain the purpose of the echo cardiographic examination to the patient and answer questions.
- Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for cardiovascular ultrasound examinations.
- Knowledge of proper infection control, patient confidentiality, and privacy laws.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with healthcare providers, including other sonographers, physicians, and nurses.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Skilled use of computers and medical equipment.

- Certification/License/Registration:
- Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Reg Diag Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS): must have one of the following at time of hire/transfer:
- RCS through Cardio Credentialing International (CCI)
- RDCS through American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
