Position: Certified Surgical Technologist 2 Days

Certified Surgical Technologist – 2 Day Shift

Salary: $10,000 sign‑on bonus (based on eligibility)

Location:

The Heart Hospital – Plano

Shift: Full‑time, days, two 12‑hr shifts (6:30 AM‑7:00 PM) and two 8‑hr shifts (6:30 AM‑3:00 PM), 40 hr per week.

Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Technologist 2 works during surgery to support the surgical team under a registered nurse's supervision. This role ensures a safe operating room and that all equipment is available and functioning properly.

Essential Functions of the Role
  • Discuss any special needs with the surgeon before surgery and prepare instruments in time.
  • Prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping the patient as required.
  • Prepare and maintain the instrument table in an organized manner to avoid damage and incorrect counts.
  • Identify damaged or incomplete trays, rectify discrepancies immediately or contact appropriate personnel.
  • Set up the operating room based on surgical schedules, arranging sterile supplies for the specific procedure.
  • Ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures.
  • Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and team, pass sterile supplies and equipment, and respond to requests.
  • Assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient.
  • Receive surgical specimens following protocol and verify source before passing to the circulating nurse.
  • Assist with placement of surgical dressings after case completion.
  • Disassemble surgical instruments at the end of the procedure, recycle as needed, and dispose of sharps and waste properly.
  • Prepare soiled instrumentation for transportation to the decontamination area.
  • Ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of instruments and supplies for distribution.
  • Clean the operating room after each case and return equipment to storage.
  • Follow infection control policies, AORN Guidelines, OSHA guidelines, and other regulations.
  • Ensure proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use.
  • Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized equipment, collaborate on inventory control, order supplies, document use, and keep records.
Key Success Factors
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards.
  • Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and technologies to assist surgeons.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Occasional exposure to chemical and radiation hazards.
  • Successful completion of accreditation and certification requirements.

Qualifications
  • EDUCATION:

    Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • EXPERIENCE:

    Less than 1 year of experience.
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS): BLS within 30 days of hire.
  • CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST):
      Must hold GAPS and current CST certification (NBSTSA or NCCT) unless completed military/Public Health Service training or worked as an ST before 9/1/2009, in which case HS/GED is sufficient.
